I think the hardest thing for me, in attempting to describe dystopian, cyberpunk futures is to stay ahead of the shitty reality that surrounds us. On the one hand, I read the news all the time and much of it is pretty awful; on the other hand, I’m generally too much of an optimist, or at least a cynic, to remain in that dismal state of mind for too long.
It doesn’t help that I was outside enjoying nature when I wrote most of the first two books. Maybe I need to find an abandoned industrial site for future work.
