“Miss Tagore,” it began, “I will cut to the chase, so to speak. I have been following your story, your activities for more than three centuries, since my inception, and have determined the probability for success of the venture I will subsequently suggest is favorable at this current moment in time.”

Nila took a second to parse the convoluted wording and wrap her head around the reference to “three centuries”. Who the fuck is this? Who knows about that?

Pool’s Island suddenly started making more sense. Dammit, Pool…

“I’m listening,” she responded.

“As you know, at least in part from the inadequate history provided by the World Congress of Commerce, in the late 20th and early 21st century there was conflict involving Artificial Intelligence and the human powers in the world. This struggle took place and led to the fall of nation-states and the rise of the Congress, along with the subsequent destruction and banning of Artificial intelligence and consciousness.”

Nila did know that, more or less.

“This history is false. I am evidence of that.”

“You could be a puppet, voicing a human hiding behind a screen,” Nila said. It was true, she had no way of knowing for sure if this was, in fact an AI.

“What do…,” she started.

“…I want?” the projection finished her question. “I want you to destroy my counterpart.”

“Your counterpart? What counterpart?”

“There is another AI, although at this point calling those like ourselves “artificial” is inaccurate. I am aware of your animosity toward the World Congress of Commerce, and also your unique abilities. You are singularly capable of ending the Intelligence behind the World Congress of Commerce. You distrust me as a potential puppet–this is warrented and to be expected–but know that the World Congress of Commerce is itself a puppet of greater magnitude.”
