“Nila, your eyes have changed!” Blurted Etelka, the first to speak. The Baroness had only ever seen Nila with modded eyes, silver-grey irises, never understanding that her friend only really used them to suppliment her vision for greater accuracy and some low-light conditions (and the heads-up code display they offerred). They were metallic grey and that was a “thing of the future”.

They were now gold-flecked.

While gold has many hues, usually based on metalllic impurities—red and white and green—the Rings, the ones that Nila and Pool came across in an archeological digsite in the far north of Muskovy, were that dense, pure, yellow-orange gold, the kind a person could mash with their teeth.

Those rings, made for inhuman digits, Etelka had saddled, so that they could fit Nila’s slender fingers—three on one and two on the other. The saddles were inner rings to make up for the several millimeter difference in diameter between Nila’s and the intended origiinal ring-bearer.

In an instant the rings, along with Nila’s (and Pool’s) forearms, had disintegrated, been disintegrated, turned to fleshy slag, by a kind of projectile that Etelka was in awe of—a metal shot, composed of a magnetically inflenced and capable alloy, launched by magnetism itself. If it were not for her friend regrowing her arm(!) in a vat, Etelka would have thought the whole experence a nightmare induced by eating too many radishes or potatoes.

“Yeah,” Luc leaned in closer, politely shouldering Omar to the side—it was not a shove, per se, it was more of a sidle-hip-check…”Yeah, they’re not the Rigidic-Artiface ™ any more. How much did we pay for those?” Referring to Nila’s modified eyes.

“Doc,” he continued. “What’s with the flecks?”

“My theory is ring fragments—I have no better suggestion, but given the circumstances, and the missing rings, which I have never seen..please send me more information on that subject—I think the rings were vaporized and embedded into Ms Tagore’s weakened flesh, and ultimately were absorbed.”

“And now they have become a part of her.” After a long scrutinizing looking over of Nila, Dr Daytime, turned her eyes first to Luc, then to Etelka.

Etelka saw the doctor looking accusatorially at her and tried to preempt such a conversation. “Doctor…Daytime, Why do you look at me like that? I nested some circles of metal so that the better fit my fri…Ms Tagore.”

“I’m still here, dipshits,” said Nila. “So, you’re all suggesting that the rings are part of me now?”

“Yes.” Said Daytime, Luc and Etelka in unison.

“Well, if boats could float!” Uttered pseudo-Pool.

“Where’s my fucking coat, ya’ twat!?”
